Taipei Day 2 - Rain
Currently I'm sitting in my hotel room with the occasional flash of lightning and rumble of thunder outside and the constant downpour of the rain. Get to the right part of town and it's probably quite Blade Runner-esque.
I walked into work for the first time this morning. It was pretty simple in the end, up the road behind the hotel, turn left at the golf course and keep going for 5-10 minutes until you reach the offices. Note when I say golf course it's only a driving range actually. You stand on an open first floor and there are nets that go up 4 floors or so and completely surrounding the area.
The rain started sometime in the afternoon I think and hasn't let up since. Luckily someone lent me an umbrella. I bought a raincoat with me - but of course didn't take it into work with me. Not that you want to wear one really given how warm it is. Even with the brolly I got quite damp but didn't notice until I got back into the air-conditioning and cooled off.
My hopeful (dinner) date for the night has to stay in and revise for a hurriedly organised meeting tomorrow so I was faced with heading out in the rain to the metro to look for recommended restaurants elsewhere in the city. So in the end I just went downstairs to the Royal Host and hoped for the best. There's a couple of odd things about Taiwan meals I've noticed based on my very limited experience so far. They often have a kind of meal deal - soup/starter, salad, main course, dessert and drink for a fixed price, and even when you order something like a coke for your drink you get it at the end of the meal with your dessert. So I had mushroom risotto, italian salad (lettuce and parmesan shavings, no dressing), salmon, panna cotta and a coke. Not exciting but quite acceptable for under a tenner and a very short walk.
