Taipei Day 1
So first day properly in Taipei. The hotel I'm in is actually "serviced apartments". The difference appears to be that there is a kitchen in my room - annoyingly the very quiet air conditioning is drowned out by the very noisy fridge - and there is no hotel restaurant but vouchers for breakfast to be used at the Royal Host (a bit reminiscent of the Little Chef attached to Travelodges - if Little Chef served omelette with miso sauce) or McDonalds.
Two of the engineers I've been working with plus the driver from last night turn up to pick me up at a civilised 9:15 and we drive about 5 minutes to their offices. They explain how easy it will be for me to walk it for the rest of the week, weather permitting. In fact we walk to within sight of the hotel when we go out for lunch a few hours later. You can take the metro (the MRT) for one stop but I'm not sure it saves much really.
Having told them I'm vegetarian they google about and find a vegetarian restaurant to take me out to in the evening. None of them have been there before - and I suspect they won't go there again. The food is an odd mixture of east and west. They have several pasta dishes and risottos, even enchilladas but they are all distinctly eastern in flavour. It wasn't bad, but I think it'll be best to stick to more traditional restaurants, and suffer the limited choice.
