A new start

It's three months since my last post so, since it's the new year, I'm going to try to go for a post a day to make up. Now technically I've missed the first day already I guess - but this doesn't really have a chance if we don't bend the rules a little. So for today's post, a little run down of some of the Christmas presents I got.

  • Doom for the XBox. I never really played Doom much when it came out originally (free level only) so this is all new to me plus I prefer games with a separate camera (ie Tomb Raider style) than with a first person POV. We'll see how far I get - I doubt it'll be the end on past form.
  • Emerson, Lake And Palmer - Beyond The Beginning (DVD) 4 hours of prog rock goodness. The first disk is full of assorted live and promo clips across the years and a few feasturettes. The second disk is a warts'n'all documentary including interviews (separately) with the three players plus a live appearance at the California Jam featuring Keith Emerson's flying piano. Apart from some duplicated content (2 tracks from the California Jam gig are also on the other disc plus feature in the documentary) it's a great package.
  • Connoisseur Corkscrew a surprisingly effective corkscrew - it requires almost no effort whatsoever - the only drawback being its size, you wouldn't pack it to take on holiday. Also it kind of looks like you could attach a bottle to it and use it as a one of those gun type hypodermic syringes you see in the movies.
  • Silent Bob Speaks Very amusing book if you like Kevin Smith. It's a collection of columns he had published in various magazines and on-line, so (mostly) previously published material, but I hadn't read any of it. There's less there than it seems due to the excessively large type but it's still a couple of hours of amusing reading covering the interviewing process on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and more details than you probably need to know about his (imagined) sex life. Buy if you enjoyed An Evening with Kevin Smith
  • Laserpod This is one of those weird light pattern making things that you stick in the corner of the room at parties, but also good for putting on with all the other lights off whilst you listen to some ambient music. Still needs some experimentation to find the best spot to show it off - but shows great promise.
